The primary learning goals should be developed with the use of the Learning Agenda.
(See Appendix for Learning
Agenda form.) Specific activities of
ministry should
then be chosen with these learning goals in mind. While a congregation may have
specific expectations of the student (e.g., youth work), these expectations
should not
be the sole determiners of the student’s activities. The student’s own self-identified
needs for learning should be at least as important as such congregational
expectations
or even the seminary’s other course requirements.
B. Suggested specific experiences for the context include:
(a) opportunities to lead worship with field instructor present.
(b) opportunities to preach or speak in a public setting
with field instructor present.
(a) opportunities to observe or participate in a funeral service and a wedding.
(If this is not possible in the setting, it would be helpful if the field instructor
could discuss the “nuts and bolts” of these services with the student
or direct the student to resources for the basics of these experiences.)
(b) opportunities to lead and/or give staff resources to meetings
with field instructor present.
(c) discussion of the above by the field instructor with the student
at the time of the field instructor/student weekly conferences.
(d) other activities that may arise in discussion between field instructor and
student about the learning agenda.
