INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Saint Paul United Church of Christ
600 Eleonore St. New Orleans, LA 70115
Posted 2/3/12

St Paul United Church of Christ is seeking a full-time seminary intern or recent seminary graduate for one year, beginning in July 2012 to help the congregation determine an appropriate future path for St Paul. The intern will be expected to provide leadership for short-term experimental programs to test the viability of alternative forms of ministry, such as retreats or worship experiences for young adults and families. The ideal candidate will be a person of deep faith with a love for the church and an entrepreneurial mindset.
St Paul UCC was founded in 1911 as the first English-speaking congregation of the Evangelical Synod of North America in New Orleans. It occupies a lovely facility in an attractive residential community located close to several of New Orleans’ institutions of higher learning. Over the past several decades its membership has declined to about a dozen active members, most in their eighties and living outside the immediate neighborhood. The congregation continues to worship on Sundays with part-time ministerial leadership. Despite its diminished strength, St Paul has been an active host for volunteer groups participating in Disaster Recovery. Members feel an appropriate sense of pride in being able to provide this service and St Paul’s facilities make this an attractive site for outside volunteers.
The community surrounding St Paul’s building remains an attractive location for ministry. It is experiencing slight population growth as homes once occupied by retired couples are sold to younger families with children. Residents are highly-educated. Demographic studies suggest this is a neighborhood with large numbers of people who regard themselves as “spiritual but not religious.”
St Paul UCC is an active participant in a collaborative effort of four New Orleans UCC churches who are committed to “sharing life” together. A Leadership Council comprised of lay and clergy members from the four churches meets monthly to explore ways to strengthen the churches’ ministry and mission.
In September 2011 the congregation’s members accepted a proposal to “reinvent” St Paul’s ministry in the current facility or an alternative location. St Paul’s leaders have identified a number of local ministry opportunities that are currently not being met: outreach to the nearby colleges and universities; programming for area families, singles, young adults and young families; ministry with those who think of themselves as “spiritual” but who are not always welcome in traditional religious communities; a resource center for “rebuilding” New Orleans. The principal mark of success of the project is an informed decision, by early fall of 2012, about the future of St Paul's ministry and deployment of its remaining assets and a "business plan" that addresses both direction and sustainability.
The existing congregation will continue to worship on Sundays while exploring alternative possibilities for ministry in collaboration with the Leadership Council. The intern’s role in worship leadership is yet to be determined.
The church will provide housing, health insurance and a monthly stipend. Supervision will be provided by a team of local UCC pastors and by the Leadership Council.
St Paul hopes to have a person in place by July 2012.
Candidates should provide a detailed resume with the names of three references prepared to comment on the candidate’s preparation for creative ministry in an urban setting. Review of applications will begin March 1, 2011.

TRANSITION-INTO-MINISTRY RESIDENCY PROGRAM
Plymouth United Church of Christ, Des Moines, Iowa
Posted 9/20/10

Plymouth United Church of Christ, Des Moines, Iowa, through funding provided by the Lilly Endowment, has a salaried 27-month residency program for two recent seminary graduates, ordained or eligible to be ordained. The residents become Associate Ministers of the pastoral staff of Plymouth Church. The Associates perform all the functions of the other ministers on the staff—weddings, funerals, pastoral care, preaching sermons, and leading worship.

Plymouth offers the Associates a significant experience in the core activities of ministry. The two Associates meet weekly with David Ruhe, Senior Minister. These weekly meetings include review and reflection on the activities of the Associates—including sermon discussions and critique. The Associates also continue readings on ministry and theology and have in-depth Bible study with the Senior Minister and the other staff, seasoned ministers who provide a rich and supportive collegial, collaborative and teaching cohort.

The Residency is designed to be an intensive working and learning environment within a congregation that is both supportive and demanding. It provides a tremendous growing experience that will leave each Associate better equipped for a long and fruitful career in ministry. The Plymouth residents are paid through a grant from the Lilly Endowment and they must seek new calls after two years.

The Plymouth Associates are integrated into the staffing patterns of the church quickly and are involved with learning experiences outside of Plymouth as well. Each Associate has an opportunity to preach in the Sunday worship programs as well as through an established Saturday worship rotation which they help to revise and lead. Plymouth provides the Associates with the freedom to imagine and implement teaching programs for the church and community.
